Truck manufacturers are emphasizing safety in their new vehicle
designs. And rightly so. Nighttime driving presents serious risks
to operators of trucks, buses, RVs, and other commercial vehicles.
Each year, more than 90,000 nighttime accidents occur with large
vehicles, many caused or influenced by degraded visibility. Drivers
lack the ability to quickly reduce speed, fatigue can negatively
affect reaction time, and vision gets severely impaired in the dark.
In fact, according to a study by Dynamic Safety Resources, “a person
with 20/20 vision during daylight is reduced to 20/50 at best when
driving at night”.
FLIR’s PathFindIR™, a thermal camera system, significantly reduces
the hazards of night time driving, enabling drivers to see much
further, with improved clarity, than standard headlights. The
PathFindIR module can be integrated into the front of new vehicle
designs, or adapted for aftermarket applications. With an in-cab
video monitor, drivers can now detect and monitor pedestrians and
animals entering their path or hovering near the roadway, and have
more time to react to the potential danger.
