Cadillac Escalade Hybrid Review - What the Auto Press Says

The 2011 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid ranks 7 out of 10 . This ranking is based on our analysis of 28 published reviews and test drives of the Cadillac Escalade Hybrid, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

The Cadillac Escalade Hybrid is great for shoppers who want to up their green cred without sacrificing the performance, interior luxury or space of a .

Reviewers don’t quite know what to make of the 2011 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid. It gets better gas mileage than the conventional model, but its fuel economy is terrible when compared with other like the 30/27 mpg city/highway of the Ford Escape Hybrid. It has a luxurious interior, but doesn’t drive as well as other like the Lexus LX, which reviewers love for its smooth ride and good handling. Plus, its big, boxy, truck-based exterior doesn’t model the current design trend: The industry is into crossovers and compacts. But, no matter how reviewers look at the Escalade Hybrid, they all end up praising it in one way or another because its in-your-face opulence just feels so good.

Reviewers generally like Escalade’s bling-tastic personality, especially now that it includes some green cred to boot. Unfortunately, its fuel-saving powertrain is not particularly cost-effective: It costs a whopping $73,840, and the initial price jump for the hybrid model will take more than 13 years to recoup in annual fuel savings. As  puts it, "Despite the snow and slush, our test 'Slade Hybrid averaged about 18 mpg in our care. Not impressed? That's 6,000 pounds of pure all-wheel-drive indulgence returning the fuel economy of a V6 sedan. That said, the $89,000 tab on our tester is pretty stiff.”

In addition to the Escalade Hybrid’s high price tag, reviewers say you’ll also encounter a few quirks that take time to get used to. The regenerative brakes feel odd and the transition between electric and gas power is noticeable. But in general, the Hybrid is much like its gas-powered sibling: big, brash, luxurious, and powerful. If you’re on the lookout for a luxury large SUV and have money to spend, the Escalade Hybrid is a great way to carry up to seven passengers in comfort and style with a little less environmental guilt. You can have you cake and eat it too -- but it won’t be cheap.

Other Luxury

Other Luxury SUVs to Consider

The Cadillac Escalade is the only full-size luxury SUV with a hybrid powertrain on the market now. If you’re looking for an environmentally-friendly people-hauler with lots of cargo space and all-wheel drive, you should check out the Escalade’s corporate cousins: the and the . Neither of these carries quite the level of luxury or cachet as the Escalade has, but they are both less expensive, even when comparably equipped. The GMC Yukon Denali Hybrid is the model’s premium trim and starts at $58,515, cheaper than the Escalade Hybrid by $15,535. It has the same powertrain and most of the same standard features as the base Escalade Hybrid. Basically, with the Escalade you’re paying extra for opulence. Their fuel economy is the same since their shared corporate parent has made both models very similar.

If Cadillac’s luxury badge is what drew you to the Escalade Hybrid and you’re willing to sacrifice some space, you should also take a look at the Audi Q7 TDI. It’s a diesel-powered crossover that seats up to seven and has a maximum of 72.5 cubic feet of cargo space. Even better is its starting price -- $51,450 including standard all-wheel drive, $22,390 less than the base four-wheel drive Escalade Hybrid. The Q7 TDI also gets and -estimated 17/25 mpg city/highway with an annual fuel cost of $2,933, comparable to the AWD Escalade Hybrid’s $2,549 per year.

Details: Cadillac Escalade Hybrid

The 2011 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid is available in two trims, the $73,840 base model and the $85,640 Platinum trim. While the base model is well-equipped with a long list of high-tech and luxury standard features, the Platinum package adds things like upgraded leather seats, wood trim, heated and cooled cup holders, and a rear-seat entertainment system. Both trims are available in either rear- or all-wheel drive, which get the same fuel economy ratings of 20/23 mpg city/highway.

The 2011 Escalade Hybrid is nearly identical to the 2010 model, with the exception of an upgrade to its On-Star communication and navigation system and additional sound-dampening materials. However, its warranty has been upgraded to cover scheduled oil changes, tire rotations, replacement of engine and cabin air filters and a multi-point vehicle inspection for four years or 50,000 miles.

  • "What the Caddy adds are in-yo-face styling and luxury trappings, plus the commensurate price premium… The brakes feel odd and artificial, but it’s just as capable and comfortable as the non-hybrid Escalade." --
  • "Cadillac's Escalade Hybrid might be a completely irrational vehicle, but that doesn't mean it's bad by any stretch. It's very luxurious inside, it drives well enough, and still has presence unlike most vehicles on the road today." --
  • "In an era where fuel efficiency is environmentally chic, the 2011 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid offers prospective owners of a luxury sport-utility the promise of full-size utility that's socially acceptable. But whether or not this big Caddy makes sense (from either a fiscal or environmental perspective) is an equally important consideration." --
  • "The new Escalade hybrid offers prestige, power and just enough greenness to annoy environmentalists. Naturally, I love it." --

- 7.6 (Good)

Reviewers generally like the 2011 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid’s performance, although they are quick to report its flaws. Some mention that the big SUV has odd brake feel, while others complain about the hybrid powertrain, which calls “quirky.”

- 7.6 (Good)

The 2011 Escalade Hybrid looks very similar to the conventional Escalade, which reviewers say is a good thing. calls it “the chromiest hybrid.” However, nine large “Hybrid” decals make this truck even more ostentatious, which some writers don’t like.

- 7.9 (Good)

Reviewers generally praise the 2011 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid’s interior for its long list of standard features and luxurious materials. However, they dislike the cramped third row, saying that it’s only comfortable for children and that it’s difficult to remove because it doesn’t fold into the floor. If you’re looking for a with adult-size third row seats, take a look at the .

- 9.2 (Excellent)

The Cadillac Escalade Hybrid performs very well in crash tests, although it hasn’t been tested by the yet.

- 8.0 (Very Good)

The 2011 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid reliability score shown is the Predicted Reliability rating provided by . This score is based on trending the past three years of historical initial quality and dependability data from J.D. Cadillac Escalade Review - What the Auto Press Says

The 2012 Cadillac Escalade ranks 2 out of 10 . This ranking is based on our analysis of 89 published reviews and test drives of the Cadillac Escalade, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

The 2012 Cadillac Escalade is probably one of the most recognizable on the market, and reviewers love that it backs up its bold, blingtastic looks with great performance. But if your priorities include practicality or subtlety, you’ll want to shop elsewhere.

The 2012 Cadillac Escalade comes standard with lots of power, clever interior features and flashy, unmistakable looks, so it’s no wonder it ranks at the top of its class. Still, auto writers note that while it’s easy to love the Escalade, the decision to buy one can be difficult.

Smaller provide third rows that are more comfortable for adults than the Escalade’s, and many of these models cost less. German and Japanese luxury brands like Audi and Infiniti provide more technological wizardry for a similar price. But no other SUV has quite the same cachet as the Cadillac Escalade.

Overall, if you have the money to spend and want to stand out from the crowd, reviewers say the Cadillac Escalade is a great choice. Just remember to invest in a good theft-prevention system, since it’s the vehicle on the market that’s , according to the Highway Loss Data Institute.

Other Luxury SUVs to Consider

Though you can’t beat this big ’s style and brawn, other outdo it with bigger third rows and better values. The is one of few luxury large SUVs with a third row adults can live with, and costs significantly less than the Escalade. Since it’s another truck-based luxury machine, its performance doesn’t even approach sporty, but neither does the Escalade’s, so it remains a good alternative.

If you’re impressed with the quality and capability of this Caddy, but aren’t ready to shell out big bucks for a glorified , you could consider its corporate cousin, the in Denali trim. It comes with similar standard features as the Escalade, including leather seats, flashy wheels and a navigation system, but costs significantly less than its Cadillac cousin. You could even opt for the Denali and get better gas mileage than the Escalade and still pay less.

Details: The Cadillac Escalade

The 2012 Cadillac Escalade comes in four trims: Standard, Luxury, Premium and Platinum. The long-wheelbase Escalade ESV comes in these four trims as well. The and the , a , are reviewed separately.

There aren’t many changes for the 2012 Cadillac Escalade, but notable ones include new exterior colors and enhancements to the navigation system.

  • "Cadillac's full-size swagger wagon offers brash, chrome-tastic styling and leather-lined luxury." --
  • "All of GM's large SUVs are solid choices in their market segments, and although Escalade wagons may not be worth every penny of their extra cost over the Denali, they are good choices in the premium-large-SUV class.” --
  • "There are full-size SUVs and then there's the Escalade. You could buy any number of big, luxurious vehicles instead, but there's just no true substitute for Cadillac's celebration of power, brashness and wheels in a package so large the Amish could stick one in a river to power a grain mill.” --
  • “With its size, its brash yet tastefully handsome styling, and its stonkin V8, the Escalade delivers what buyers in this segment are looking for.” --
  • "If you desire a capable, full-size premium luxury SUV that isn't shy about attracting attention, the … Cadillac Escalade ESV belongs in your driveway. That's partially because it probably won't fit in your garage.” --

- 8.3 (Very Good)

Test drivers say the Cadillac Escalade is extraordinarily competent and comfortable for a large, truck-based SUV. "A lumbering brute in tight spaces, the Escalade excels at highway journeys where it's quiet and comfortable,” writes . “Its heavy body-on-frame architecture makes it a dinosaur, but it's a supremely useful and capable one.”

- 9.1 (Excellent)

The 2012 Cadillac Escalade’s flamboyant exterior is one thing that most reviewers love about this luxury large SUV. If you’re looking to blend in with the crowd though, the Escalade is definitely not the SUV for you. See .

- 8.0 (Very Good)

Reviewers praise the 2012 Cadillac Escalade’s sumptuous interior, but all complain about the frustrating third-row seats.

Mercedes-Benz GL Review - What the Auto Press Says

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz GL ranks 1 out of 10 . This ranking is based on our analysis of 78 published reviews and test drives of the Mercedes-Benz GL, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

If you’ve got your heart set on a and you have the cash to spend, reviewers say you can’t do much better than the 2012 Mercedes-Benz GL.

Test drivers rave about the 2012 GL-Class’ high-quality interior that lives up to the badge, its fuel-efficient Bluetec diesel engine and surprisingly roomy passenger accommodations. It drives more like a car than its truck-based competitors do, so shoppers who want an SUV the size of the Mercedes-Benz GL will have more fun flinging it down twisty roads compared with competitors.

The automotive press is quick to note that consumers who are on the fence would likely be better off buying a instead of this hulking behemoth. First of all, though the Mercedes-Benz GL’s competitors’ truck-based frames may not help them when cruising on the highway, but they do have some off-road ability that the GL doesn’t. Plus, large SUVs like the GL get poor fuel economy, and don’t always hold more cargo or more people than smaller like the .

So, if you’ve decided you need a large SUV in order to take your family to that backwoods cabin, the GL-Class isn’t your best choice, and if you’re looking for a cavernous family hauler with car-like driving dynamics, the GL-Class probably isn’t your best choice for that either. But if you’re set on a large SUV that may cost a lot at the dealership and the pump, but can’t be matched in terms of size, ride and interior quality, the 2012 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class may be your best choice.

Other SUVs to Consider

Shoppers who want to keep a luxurious, all-wheel drive off-road beast in their garage should also consider the . It can only seat five people, compared with the Mercedes-Benz GL’s seven-seat capacity, but it’s got some of the burliest off-road capabilities in the class. Plus, the comes with enough luxury-brand cachet that some buyers might feel the extra money is worth it.

If you’re on a budget and you prioritize interior comfort over off-road prowess, check out the . Its polarizing exterior makes a bigger statement than the Mercedes-Benz GL’s does, but reviewers love its long list of standard features and its cavernous interior. It doesn’t have the refined on-road manners the Mercedes-Benz does, but its lower starting price should cause shoppers to take a second look.

Details: Mercedes-Benz GL

The Mercedes-Benz GL comes in three trim levels: the GL350 BlueTEC, the GL450 and the GL550. For 2012, Mercedes-Benz has made minor updates to the interior and added directional guidelines to the rearview camera. All three trims now come standard with LED daytime running lights. See the full list of .

  • "As far as large SUVs go, this is one of our favorites. It seats seven, offers respectable towing capacity, and has the moves of a much smaller SUV.” --
  • "The Mercedes-Benz GL-Class doesn't have the sheer interior volume of some premium-large SUVs, but accommodations are more than adequate for the majority of buyers. Relatively trim exterior dimensions ease parking and maneuverability, too. Any GL offers impressive power and high levels of refinement.” --
  • "Contrary to the mantra adopted by American consumers in the late 1990s, not everyone needs a loaded-to-the-hilt, all-wheel-drive, seven-seat SUV. But for those who do, and also desire a vehicle well suited to the traditional family-style road trip, there's almost no besting the GL.” --
  • "Overall, this is a great luxury SUV. It's roomy, comfortable and with the diesel, it's efficient.” --
  • "As prevalent as it might be in these days of downsizing and budget cuts to dismiss full-size SUVs as relics of the past, they exist for very good reasons, most of which are clearly demonstrated by the … Mercedes-Benz GL-Class.” --

- 8.4 (Very Good)

Reviewers are impressed with the way the 2012 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class drives, no matter which engine you choose. "Surprisingly maneuverable, the GL offers precise steering, great engines, a supple ride, and a solid feel,” writes .

- 8.4 (Very Good)

Though the 2012 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class doesn’t look as brash and over-the-top as competitors like the , some reviewers like its understated styling. If you’re looking to make a bold statement, you should consider the or ’s own . See .

- 8.2 (Very Good)

Although other luxury brands like Lexus and Infiniti might offer more interior features for less money, reviewers say it’s hard to beat the 2012 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class’ levels of interior quality and comfort.

- NA

The Mercedes-Benz GL-Class has not been crash tested by either the or the , but it comes with a number of standard and optional safety features that align with the rest of its class.

- NA

covers the 2012 GL with a four-year/50,000-mile new vehicle limited .
