Japanese auto giant Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling about one million vehicles to address faulty parts that could cause drivers to lose steering control.
Toyota confirmed it will recall a total of 565,756 vehicles sold in Japan, as well as another 400,000 units that were sold overseas.
The recall includes vehicles built between September 2002 and November 2005. Though the company says there have been no reported accidents from the defects, there have been 30 complaints filed since March 2004.
The problem is faulty intermediate shafts and sliding yokes. According to Toyota, these parts are weak and could distort or crack under strong pressure. This would cause drivers to lose control of the steering wheel.
The recall includes Toyota's best-selling Prius electric hybrid and eight other models. In a statement, the automaker said it includes the Wish, Isis, Corolla, Corolla Runx, Corolla Fielder, Corolla Spacio, Allex and Ractis models, many of which are sold only in Japan. It was not immediately clear from overseas wire reports which models sold in North America are included in the recall.
