英国人有给儿子取名为爷爷名字的习俗(或是家族中很了不起的某位长者之名),从家谱中可以看出MG TF 的命名来自1953–1955 之名,以纪念这位伟大的尊者。(见图)

说及TF的上一代MG F( 1995–2005),在英国及欧美卖疯了,始终保持销量冠军的头把交椅(UK"s best-selling sports car).可谓"红极一时"主儿.

MG F Mark I


The MG F was launched in the autumn of 1995 by the Rover Group, making it the third all-new car to be launched in its first full year since the takeover. It was powered by a 1.8 L engine, the basic having 118 hp (87 kW) while the more powerful (variable valve control) had 145 hp (107 kW). Rover Special Projects oversaw the development of the F"s design and before finalising the styling bought-in outside contractors to determine the most appropriate mechanical configuration for the new car. Steve Harper of MGA Developments produced the initial design concept in January 1991 (inspired by the and the ), before Rover"s in house design team refined the concept under the leadership of . An interesting feature of the F was its suspension, a system employing interconnected fluid and gas displacers which provided a surprisingly compliant ride but which could be tuned to provide excellent handling characteristics. The folding soft top mechanism was licensed from as used in their , which simplified the design process. The standard mazda soft top had to be heavily modified for the MGF to fit the uneven upper bodywork. The MG F quickly shot to the top of the affordable sports car charts in Britain and remained there until the introduction of the MG TF in 2002.


MG F Mark II


The MG F underwent a facelift in Autumn of 1999 and gave the car a revised interior as well as styling tweaks and fresh alloy wheels designs. There was also the introduction of a base 1.6 version and a more powerful 160 hp (119 kW) variant called the Trophy 160, which had a 0-60 mph time of 6.9 seconds. It was only produced for a limited time. An automatic version with a called the Steptronic was also introduced. The MG F continued to sell well in spite of the sale of the Rover Group, which was announced in March 2000. was sold to , while the MG and Rover marques were sold to the Phoenix consortium for £10. In spite of competition from the likes of , and , the MG F still proved fairly popular.

Unerringly stable, depite a cornering attitude you can adjust on the throttle, the little MG was one of the few cars able to take Church flat-out without scaring its driver witless. part of the stability is down to the way it soaks up bumps without being jerked off line; there"s oversteer, but it"s amazingly gradual for a mid-engined car. There"s a touch of understeer, too, but the front wheels will still bite if you need to turn harder. As long as you keep on the power, the MG points in the right direction. It"s fluid, safe, and much more manageable in the wet than the Elise.

So why is the MGF so good? The Hydragas suspension"s combination of supple bump absorption and taut control plays a part, ensuring the MG is never subjected to sudden extreme forces which could knock it off its fine balance, and its tyres give just the right amount of grip - any more, and that wonderful progression would be lost.........no mid engined car inspires more confidence across all conditions. The MG offers all the larks a small mid-engined car ought to bring without the worries.

MGF VVC:
Jeremy Clarkson: "...put some decent seats in. Then it"s the best car here ...you could live with it every day and I reckon it"s faster than the Boxster. The superb engine completely transforms it."

Lotus Elise:
JC: And then you drive it over 100 miles and you haven"t got that smile on your face anymore.
TN: Of course you can drive an Elise 100 miles.
JC: And you can also stick needles in your eyes.
TN: It"s a second car; a weekend car.
JC: No it"s a fourth or fifth car.
