Volkswagen US has issued a stop sale order on its several models equipped with the an automatic transmission and 1.8 four-cylinder "EA888" power unit. An official statement from the car maker"s desk states that an O-ring that links the transmission cooler to the gearbox can leak and potentially start a fire. The auto major started using this turbocharged EA888 last year in Silao, Mexico, hoping its fuel economy would help the firm to expand its sales in United States.

About 25,000 cars including models of the Jetta, Passat, Beetle and Beetle Convertible, powered by EA888 mated to automatic transmission are covered under the stoppage. All of the affected models were built after February 1. Many of the cars are already being delivered to the customers, but the company is still working to figure out exactly how many.

The company expects to have the correct part in two weeks or less and repairs should take about 30 minutes. "We"re trying to fix it as quickly as possible," spokesperson from VW said. Although there haven"t been any reports of fires, crashes or injuries caused by the problem.
